Traveling for the Holidays? Don’t Forget to Take Care of Your Spine!

The holiday season is upon us, and this means for many of us hitting the road or taking to the skies to celebrate with family and friends. While the holidays are a time of joy and festivities remember to take care of your health as well as your spine. Especially while traveling! Remember: a happy spine is a healthy spine!

1. Handle Luggage Like a Pro

Choose the right luggage: pick luggage with wheels to minimize strain on your back and shoulders, or if this is not possible consider a backpack that has padded straps and good weight distribution.

Pack smart and light, this will help reduce the risk of uneven pressure on your spine.

Life with caution! When lifting your luggage remember to bend your knees and use your legs, never your back. Also remember to avoid twisting and if possible, ask for assistance with heavy bags.

2. Maintain Good Posture

Sit smart, this means sitting with your back straight and supported. You may need to use a small cushion or a lumbar roll to support the curve of your spine. Adjust your seat if you need to and keep your knees at a 90-degree angle.

Take breaks! If you are driving set your timer to get out of the car and stretch every hour or so. IF flying takes advantage of layovers, and opportunities to stand and stretch.

3. Hydrate

Your spine loves water, so make sure that you are choosing plenty of water. Also choose nutritious snacks like nuts, whole grain snacks etc.

4. Rest When You Arrive

I know it can be exciting arriving but remember that a good night’s sleep is essential for overall well-being including the health of your spine.

Lastly, Dr. Hebdon wants you to remember that taking care of your spine during your holiday travels is an investment in your overall well-being. By following these tips, you can arrive at your destination feeling refreshed, relaxed, and ready to enjoy the festivities. Wishing you safe and spine-friendly travels this holiday season!

Happy Holidays
